Sea The Stars retired
SEA THE STARS, arguably the best racehorse in the world, has been retired.
There is major disappointment in many circles, however, as it was anticipated he would contest the
Breeders' Cup Classic at
Santa Anita next month, with Kieren Fallon among those who would have liked to see him race in the US, the Racing Post reported.
"He's been a brilliant horse, and it was a fine training performance," Fallon told the paper.
"Personally, I'd like to have seen him run in the Breeders' Cup because Santa Anita has such a good surface, and it would have been great for racing."
However, Criquette Head-Maarek, who trained Three Troikas to win the 1979 Arc, fully agreed with the decision to call time on the career of Sea The Stars.
"He was a great horse and it was the right decision to retire him, as you can't take risks with a horse of his quality. It was natural to end his career," she said.
"He was very impressive when winning the Arc and it's a long time since we've seen a horse as good as Sea The Stars."
Aidan O'Brien, who trained three different horses to finish second to Sea The Stars in four Group One races, said: "Everybody knows how good he was, but I think he was masterfully trained and ridden by John Oxx and Michael Kinane."
Even bookmakers Coral were full of praise for Sea The Stars, despite him costing the firm "a small fortune".
"Sea The Stars has given a huge boost to the sport of Flat racing this (northern) summer, and he captured the imagination of punters across Britain," spokesman David Stevens said.
"His Arc win was unique in that even the bookmakers were cheering him home, despite his victory costing us a small fortune, and we at Coral were particularly thrilled when he won a vintage renewal of the Coral-Eclipse in July."
