Emirates Melbourne Cup
VIEWED is our on top selection and tipped to go back-to-back in the Emirates Melbourne Cup.
It appears as though every race this time in, trainer Bart Cummings has slowly built towards the Cup, which is his Grand Final.
He won the Caulfield Cup two starts ago in brilliant fashion, following the pegs all-the-way home and sprinting away from his rivals in the straight. That proved that despite the 57kg, he still has a blinding turn of foot over the distance.
The only concern is the 58kg here.
TAB Sportsbet have reported heavy betting activity for Viewed in the lead-up to the Cup.
ALCOPOP and
SHOCKING are the obvious threats.
Alcopop has blitzed his rivals this time in, including two easy defeats of Shocking in the JRA Cup and Herbert Power Stakes. He will carry 52.5kg and there is a query as the inexperience of both trainer (Jake Stephens) and jockey Dominic Tourneur at this level, however, he looks hard to beat.
Shocking won easily in the Lexus Stakes last Saturday at Flemington and looked a different horse to the one that was easily handled by Alcopop in previous outings.
He has had two starts at Flemington for two good wins. He will be flying home at the finish.
MASTER OREILLY has been finding the line well in his recent races but is yet to win. In fact, he hasn't won a race since the 2007 Caulfield Cup.
This is his third attempt at the Melbourne Cup, with his previous efforts an eighth and a fourth. Hit the line well behind Scenic Shot in the Mackinnon Stakes last Saturday, as did Viewed.
The best of the overseas horses appears to be
BASALTICO.
He found the line really well in the Geelong Cup when seventh behind Leica Ding after having no luck in the straight.
With a light weight, look for him to be charging home at a good price.
MUNSEF is another at is 50/1 in most markets, however, that could be an over-exaggerated price. He appears to be a good stayer and although eight-years-old, has only had 32 starts and run in the top three 70 percent of the time.
Best of the rest are
LEICA DING, who flashed home to win the Geelong Cup,
ROMAN EMPEROR who is in most experts top 4 picks, along with two genuine roughies in
HARRIS TWEED and
CAPECOVER.
